Find Your Voice!

Gender-Affirming Voice Care can help if:

  • You have vocal dysphoria - distress or discomfort about your voice not matching who you are
  • You're misgendered because of your voice, especially on the phone
  • You experience vocal strain or fatigue
  • You want to communicate more confidently
  • You’ve tried online resources but aren’t sure where to start

Gender-Affirming Voice Care helps you find a voice that matches who you are.

What is Gender-Affirming Voice Care?

Gender-Affirming Voice Care helps you build a voice that brings you joy. The goal is not to fit a stereotypical idea of how a feminine or masculine voice should sound. It's to find a voice that fits you. Anyone who wants a healthy, flexible voice that fits who they are can benefit, whether they are trans, gender-diverse, or cisgender.

We start with an evaluation of your voice, goals, and strengths, and a conversation about what matters most to you. From there, we develop a personalized plan to build a healthy, adaptable voice using strategies that fit your life. This may involve adjusting habits, tweaking your environment, and building daily warm-up routines. We experiment with different elements of voice (including resonance, vocal weight and pitch) to help you sound and feel more like yourself. Together we work to create a voice that supports your wellbeing and reflects your true self.

We can work on other aspects of communication, such as gestures and word choice, if these are important to you.

Why choose me for gender-affirming voice care?

I have deep respect and love for the trans and gender-diverse community. About a decade ago, I was approached to offer gender-affirming voice care. At the time, I had extensive experience in speech and language, but very little in voice therapy. I wanted people seeking to change their voice to receive the best possible care, so I referred them to colleagues who specialized in voice therapy.

About 6 years ago, I committed to buiding my knowledge and skills so that I could offer gender-affirming voice care. Since then, I have:

  • Taken singing lessons to explore my own voice
  • Joined an ongoing mentorship program for voice professionals
  • Completed specialized training in gender-affirming voice therapy
  • Continued to learn from courses, mentorship, and (most importantly) from listening to trans and nonbinary people

I welcome your whole self — your gender identity, culture, language, neurology, joys, fears, and goals. I welcome you to share as much or as little of your story as you feel comfortable sharing.

I offer voice care across Manitoba and Ontario.

If you’re having trouble finding gender-affirming voice services elsewhere in Canada, please reach out. I’ll do my best to connect you with support. Or check the Vocal Congruence Project Provider Map linked below.

From your first appointment to ongoing care, here’s what to expect:

Choose a time that works for you and reserve your spot online.

After booking, you'll receive an intake form to share your voice and communication strengths, challenges, and goals. Completing it ahead of time helps make your assessment faster, easier, and more personalized.

To make the most of your evaluation time, you'll be asked to submit a few short voice recordings in advance. These are analyzed using specialized software (Praat) to establish your baseline and personalize your assessment from the start.

You'll receive simple tips to get your tech ready so everything runs smoothly on the day of your appointment.

After your assessment, we'll review your results together and map out a plan tailored to you. We'll set meaningful goals, and decide on session frequency and length based on your needs and preferences — so your care fits your life.

We usually do these activities during sessions:

  • Check-in: we start by checking in with you and your voice
  • Warm-up: we warm up your voice so that you have a flexible instrument to work with
  • Targeted exercises: we practice skills that bring you closer to your goals
  • Home practice support: we discuss what to work on between sessions, because that's even more important than the work we do during sessions

We'll track your progress, adjust the plan as needed, and celebrate your wins along the way — because reaching your goals means living your best life.

Here are some things to think about when getting support to change your voice:

  • Progress may be unpredictable, and that's perfectly normal.
  • You may go through a period where your voice feels unfamiliar or unstable, similar to voice changes during puberty.
  • Voice work is a collaboration. Part of my role is to guide you and give you tools. Part of your role is to explore your voice.
  • Voice work can be deeply personal and can make you feel vulnerable.
