Find Your Voice!

Gender-Affirming Voice Care can help if you want to communicate more confidently and comfortably:

  • You are stressed because your voice doesn't fit who you are (vocal dysphoria)
  • You're misgendered because of your voice, especially on the phone
  • You've found a voice that fits, but it causes strain, fatigue, or takes huge effort
  • You’ve tried online resources to change your voice, but didn't know where to start
  • You don't have time to look through all the information online to find what works
  • You've found a voice that fits who you are, but it's challenging to use it in real conversations with real people

Gender-Affirming Voice Care can help you to sound like yourself!

What is Gender-Affirming Voice Care?

Gender-Affirming Voice Care helps you build a voice that brings you joy. The goal is not to sound like a stereotypical male or female. It's to find your own unique voice so that you can communicate with confidence and comfort.

We start with an evaluation of your voice, goals, and strengths, and a conversation about what's important to you. From there, we develop a personalized plan to build a healthy, adaptable voice using strategies that fit your life. This may involve adjusting habits, tweaking your environment, and building daily warm-up routines. We experiment with different elements of voice (including resonance, vocal weight and pitch) to help you sound and feel more like yourself. Together we work to create a voice that supports your wellbeing and reflects your true self.

Why choose me for gender-affirming voice care?

I have deep respect and love for the trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse community. I welcome your whole self — your gender identity, culture, language, neurology, joys, fears, and goals. I welcome you to share as much or as little of your story as you feel comfortable sharing.

Here's a bit of my story: About a decade ago, people started approaching me to offer gender-affirming voice care. Although I had been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over two decades, I had very little experience in voice care; most Speech-Language Pathologists do not have a lot of voice experience. Since I wanted people to receive the best possible care, I referred them to colleagues with more voice care experience.

About 6 years ago, I dedicated myself to building my knowledge and skills in gender-affirming voice care. I wanted to offer services to help people find their unique voice myself, not to send them elsewhere and wonder if they were finding the support they needed and deserved. What I didn't expect was how much joy this work would bring me. I got to learn a whole new area of Speech-Language Pathology, and meet some of the most amazing people I've ever met! In the past few years, I have:

  • Taken singing lessons to explore my own voice
  • Joined an ongoing mentorship program for voice professionals
  • Completed specialized training in gender-affirming voice therapy
  • Continued to learn from courses, mentorship, and (most importantly) from listening to trans and nonbinary people

Here are some of the main courses I've taken to develop my skills:

  • 2021: Gender Affirming Voice Training: A Course for Voice Clinicians, Hirsch, Helou, Block & Goldberg
  • 2022: Trans Voice Elective, Goldberg
  • 2026: Trans Voice Teacher Training, Davidson & Moos
  • 2026: Advanced Practice for Vocal Affirmation, Helou & Mahon

I'm constantly looking for opportunities to improve my skills, because you deserve to work with someone who's always growing. Beyond the courses above, I attend an ongoing voice mentorship program led by Melanie Tapson, Speech-Language Pathologist and Singing Voice Specialist. I've also attended the TransPride YOUniting Health & Wellness Conference for the past few years. Alongside gender-affirming voice content, it's a wonderful opportunity to learn about gender-affirming healthcare more broadly, which helps me understand my clients more holistically.

I offer voice care across Manitoba and Ontario. If you’re having trouble finding gender-affirming voice services elsewhere in Canada, please reach out. I’ll do my best to connect you with support. Or check the Vocal Congruence Project Provider Map linked below.

From your first appointment to ongoing care, here’s what to expect:

Choose a time that works for you and reserve your spot online.

After booking, you'll receive an intake form to share your voice and communication strengths, challenges, and goals. Completing it ahead of time helps make your assessment faster, easier, and more personalized.

To make the most of your evaluation time, you'll be asked to submit a few short voice recordings in advance. These are analyzed using specialized software (Praat) to establish your baseline and personalize your assessment from the start.

You'll receive simple tips to get your tech ready so everything runs smoothly on the day of your appointment.

After your assessment, we'll review your results together and map out a plan tailored to you. We'll set meaningful goals, and decide on session frequency and length based on your needs and preferences — so your care fits your life.

We usually do these activities during sessions:

  • Check-in: we start by checking in with you and your voice
  • Warm-up: we warm up your voice so that you have a flexible instrument to work with
  • Targeted exercises: we practice skills that bring you closer to your goals
  • Home practice support: we discuss what to work on between sessions, because that's even more important than the work we do during sessions

We'll track your progress, adjust the plan as needed, and celebrate your wins along the way — because reaching your goals means living your best life.

Here are some things to think about when getting support to change your voice:

  • Progress may be unpredictable, and that's perfectly normal.
  • You may go through a period where your voice feels unfamiliar or unstable, similar to voice changes during puberty.
  • Voice work is a collaboration. Part of my role is to guide you and give you tools. Part of your role is to explore your voice.
  • Voice work can be deeply personal and can make you feel vulnerable.
